Pre-Education Case Studies
A case study is essentially a story – it provides an illustration of how financial lessons can be put into action by real people in real-world situations. Case studies are engaging and relatable, and offer solid evidence of the practical value financial education has to help people solve problems and make sound life decisions.
Following are three case studies with associated exercises. The first case study, “Financial Foundation & Growth,” is about a person who is just starting out, has limited assets, or may be in a financial situation that needs a little bit of improvement; this person may have neglected this aspect of money management. It’s about setting a baseline or getting off on the right foot while having hit one of the roadblocks everyone encounters in life. The second case study, “Financial Challenges & Recovery,” is about a person who has already made financial mistakes and needs to repair a bad decision or negative situation. The third case study, “Doing Just Fine/Maintenance,” focuses on a person who is already in a good situation with his/her finances as pertains to the lesson topic. This case study character is not a beginner and does not need to repair a mistake; he/she simply needs to maintain this positive position. While you certainly may decide to complete all three case study exercises, you also are free to choose the one that most closely matches your own situation as related to the topic of this lesson and just complete that exercise.
